IKEA C&Ds IKEAhacker blog

IKEA’s lawyers are demanding that fan site IKEAhackers.Net change their name, because the site is advertising supported and IKEA refuses to let anyone make money with their name or logo.

Coverage here, here, here.

Since the IKEAhackers blog is unlikely to be able to stay online without advertising revenue, IKEA is in the position of trying to kill a fan group website that was actually driving business towards them. Brilliant!

Colorful Medieval Map of Britain

Julian Harrison at the Medieval Manuscripts blog has done a better job of writing about this map than I can, so I will just quote him and link to his post.

John Hawks is Professor of Anthropology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and works at the junction of modern genetic analysis and classical human archeology. He has a blog.

I will back-fill our whirlwind tour of England and Wales anon.

The Owl and The Pussycat

Fum (Smoke) & Gebra (Frost), the Internet’s favorite Cat and Owl, as animated .GIFs.

Barn owl and black cat playing together

The Owl and the Pussy-cat went to sea
In a beautiful pea-green boat,
They took some honey, and plenty of money,
Wrapped up in a five-pound note.
The Owl looked up to the stars above,
And sang to a small guitar,
“O lovely Pussy! O Pussy, my love,
What a beautiful Pussy you are,
— Edward Lear (1812–1888)

There’s an archive of Fum and Gebra, but unfortunately Fum died of FUS last year. Gebra has a new friend, though, and a Facebook page.

Theo weighs in on Heartbleed

I’ve been subjected to a fair bit of hysteria about the heartbleed vulnerability in OpenSSL. While it’s admittedly a severe problem, I can’t see much use in all the frothing Y2K-esque fearmongering (although it’s funny when Randall does it).

But honestly, I’ve been looking forward to Theo’s take on this, and he did not disappoint. You never doubt where Theo stands!

OpenSSL has exploit mitigation countermeasures to make sure it’s exploitable. — Ted Unangst

As the various cert vendors I deal with have been telling me all morning (can you stop emailing me now, guys, please?) it’s time to patch the vulnerable webservers, get new certs and move on.

IF YOU DID NOT UNDERSTAND ANY OF THE ABOVE, here’s what you do: Test each site you use (like, for example, mail.google.com or www.yahoo.com) using Filippo Valsorda’s tester. Once ALL the sites you use are patched, change ALL your passwords on ALL websites you use. Don’t change your password on a site that’s not patched – don’t even log in on a site that’s not patched! That will just increase the chances you will be hacked. Don’t assume that because your site is OK now, that you don’t need to change your password – the big boys (Yahoo comes to mind) were vulnerable for quite a while before they patched, but they test out fine now.

Hoyer’s blob

Heather pointed me to Andrew Hoyer’s web page, which is full of clever web programming tricks. I found the build log for the blob particularly interesting.

Hopefully Mr. Hoyer won’t mind my embedding his work here. Grab an eyeball and drag it around! The real version is much better because the icons aren’t overscale.

WordPress autoupdate did not break my RSS.

I really like WordPress, but the last spontaneous update (the autoupdate feature was recently enabled by default) seems to have broken my RSS. Good thing nobody reads this blog, I guess! I’m turning the bloody thing off. Grumble grumble grumble.

Update 2014-02-05: Perhaps not related to the 3.8.1 autoupdate, but rather to the new version of WordPress’s embedded post editor in 3.8. The damnable thing (which has always been too “expert hostile” for my taste, in every version) took a quote that I’d pasted in from a .PDF and sprinkled it with magical invisible ^L characters, which are not legitimate in RSS. I found them with a serious editor and got rid of them, now RSS works again.

time to play whack-a-mole

Bev Harris of Black Box Voting has obtained and published source code to the Accenture voting software used in US elections!

Excerpt from Bev’s post:

Note that one of the service items reveals that it was tripling votes for “random” voters in the 2004 primary. Files I have obtained show that it doubled or tripled votes in the 2008 primary, and also in the May 2010 and Aug 2010 primaries in Tennessee. However: It is not random. It only appears to be random when voters are sorted by fields other than precinct/voter ID. In fact, it is doubling and tripling recorded votes in white Republican suburbs.

Everyone with any computer chops who has actually been studying this issue knows that vote-rigging has been on the rise in the US for quite some time. It’s always seemed pretty clear to me that vote fraud is not nationally co-ordinated – it’s happening all over the place, in individual districts, and both parties are involved. Basically, an eminently hackable voting machine with no audit trail is an attractive nuisance.

BBV is (so far) holding up under the load, and (so far) hasn’t been shut down by the authorities. I’m hoping for a repeat of the DeCSS whack-a-mole comedy. Download it and pass it on!

slashdot sure has jumped the shark

Near the end of the 20th century, when slashdot was personally run by Rob Malda and a very small crew of friends, I used to spend a tremendous amount of time on the site. You could engage in free-for-all discussions with Daniel Robbins, Alan Cox, Donald Becker, Andrew Tridgell, Dan Bernstein or Keith Packard, and occasionally somebody like Steve Wozniak or John Carmack would just drop in to the middle of your conversation. You could make a comment about some coding decision SUCS had made that compromised the reliability of routing information in the linux network stack, and not only would you get a lively response arguing for and against it, you might find the author himself engaging you – either defending his code, or asking how you thought it should be fixed, or both. There was a strong libertarian vibe, but the conversation was about technology.

Very little of the above applies to slashdot today. In fact the closest thing to what slashdot was may well be Rob’s personal G+ stream (the link probably only works if you’re in the Google thingiverse).

Today, slashdot looks like this or this astonishingly often. It’s like a hypernexus of Ayn Rand worshippers and concern trolls reacted to form a hard nodule of utra-truthiness, where any attempt at technical discussion inevitably warps into a political screed that demonizes one group or another – favorite targets being democrats, “greens”, muslims, and absolutely anything funded by tax dollars.

WordPress editor eats my /a’s

I routinely type straight HTML out of my head; the syntax is so simple it’s easier to type the codes than lift my hand off the keyboard and start flailing around with a desk rodent.

But wordpress doesn’t like that. It eats the closing tags off my “a” links, and when I put them back it just swallows them again. The only way to keep my HTML valid is to use the GUI editor, which is annoyingly slow when compared to typing raw HTML flat out. It’s like being forced to bolt training wheels on a racing motorcycle, dammit.

Heather says she thinks there’s a setting somewhere. I guess I’ll google it… well, there are a lot of people complaining I see. Skimming the reports, it appears that I might get rid of this annoying behaviour by turning off “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” in the formatting options under the “Writing” settings in the dashboard. Hell, I’m going to turn off all the formatting options – in the unlikely event anyone actually reads my ravings, I’m sure they can figure out what :-) and :-P mean for themselves.
