Officer Involved

Radio station KPCC has put together an impressive expose of the Los Angeles Police Department. Apparently, if you want to kill unarmed, non-violent people without fear of prosecution, the LAPD has a career option for you!

Maybe that’s why police officers are far more likely to abuse their children and partners than the rest of us – because we’re attracting and selecting the worst possible people to serve as peacekeepers? Or is it even worse than that; does police culture actually create monsters from people who honestly wanted to do good?

“The infliction of physical punishment is not every man’s job, and naturally we were only too glad to recruit men who were prepared to show no squeamishness at their task. Unfortunately, we knew nothing about the Freudian side of the business, and it was only after a number of instances of unnecessary flogging and meaningless cruelty that I tumbled to the fact that my organization had been attracting all the sadists in Germany and Austria without my knowledge for some time past. It had also been attracting unconscious sadists, i.e. men who did not know themselves that they had sadist leanings until they took part in a flogging. And finally it had actually been creating sadists. For it seems that corporal chastisement ultimately arouses sadistic leanings in apparently normal men and women. Freud might explain it.” — Rudolf Diels, as quoted in Larson’s “In the Garden of Beasts”.

Murder by Cop

Want to see the cops murder somebody in cold blood? Well, if you’re a bigot who works at Walmart, you can just wait for a young black man to pick up a BB gun and dial 9-1-1.

Upcoming MO guns study…

The beeb’s article Missouri gun murders ‘rose after law repeal’ says that an upcoming (but currently unavailable) study from the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research “provides some of the most compelling evidence yet for tighter gun controls in the US.”

Apparently it does so by linking the removal of a legal requirement for background checks prior to handgun purchase with a rise in gun homicides. That correlation seems pretty likely, I think; if you intend to kill someone, and you can easily get a gun, why would you use anything else? It’s so obvious as to be almost a tautology.

But I will be interested in seeing how this plays out, since the FBI says that homicides overall went down in Missouri during the same period the study claims that gun homicides went up. This has been the national trend; homicides mostly decreasing as gun ownership has trended steadily upwards.

It seems to me that anti-gun crusaders don’t really argue any more honestly than the NRA’s anti-Obama basket cases.

Death and sorrow and pain and murder

Things have been pretty bleak for a while.

Sad farewells to Lou and Beth Goddard, dead by their own hands. It’s a hole in my heart.

And to Karen Troiani, murdered by her husband Jack, who also killed himself. I hope I will always remember her kindness.

To Nancy O’Neil Allison, after a painful battle with cancer. More thanks than I can express, Rick, for being there for her.

And to June MacArtor, of all of these the only one who lived a long and fruitful life, a courageous woman who will be sorely missed.

To Michael Forestieri, whose extreme religiosity led him to acts that were morally outrageous, isolating him from many friends. Not everyone understood, and not all of those who did understand could forgive him, but he was nevertheless was a good man.

I’m going to take a vacation, and when I come back, I’ll post something less painful.

Only in silence the word,
Only in dark the light,
Only in dying life:
Bright the hawk’s flight
On the empty sky.

gun safes unsafe

I’m a strong supporter of people’s right to defend themselves, which is why I’m extra horrified by this video of children two and three years old trivially opening commercial gun safes.

The video is from Marc Weber Tobias, and was posted to Forbes today.

The most interesting part? Tobias investigated these safes due to a real-life incident in which a 3-year-old died; when his law firm contacted the makers of that safe, and Walmart, who sold the safe, the makers and vendors refused to view the evidence. Instead, they stated that the safes meet the standards of various regulatory offices, and therefore would continue to be sold.
